Accessory breasts<\/b>, also known as\u00a0polymastia<\/b>,\u00a0supernumerary breasts<\/b>, or\u00a0mammae erraticae<\/b><\/i>, is the condition of having an\u00a0additional<\/a>\u00a0breast<\/a>. These extra breasts may appear with or without\u00a0nipples<\/a>\u00a0or\u00a0areolae<\/a>. The condition, a form of\u00a0atavism<\/a>, is most commonly observed in males and is generally harmless, often going untreated. However, in recent years, many affected women have had a\u00a0plastic surgery<\/a>\u00a0operation to remove the additional breasts, for purely\u00a0aesthetic<\/a>\u00a0reasons.<\/p>\n

A related condition, in which extra nipples form, is called “supernumerary nipple<\/a>” or “polythelia”.<\/p>\n

Presentation<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n

In some cases, the accessory breast may not be visible at the surface. In these cases, it may be possible to distinguish their appearance from normal breast tissue with\u00a0MRI<\/a>.[<\/span>1]<\/span><\/a><\/sup>\u00a0In other cases, accessory breasts have been known to lactate, as illustrated in a drawing showing a child nursing at ectopic breast tissue on the lateral thigh.[<\/span>2]<\/span><\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n

There is some evidence that the condition may be more common in\u00a0Native American<\/a>\u00a0populations.[<\/span>3]<\/span><\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n

Cause<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n

Polymastia typically occurs in the womb during development. During normal development, breast tissue will develop along the\u00a0milk line<\/a>, and additional tissue will disintegrate and be absorbed into the body. Polymastia occurs when the additional tissue does not disintegrate before birth. This condition can be inherited.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
